People often question how much Commandos or their components weight. Since I've lately been exporting Commando components likes engines and gearboxes to other countries, it's important that I know what they weight. It is especially important as the shipping price difference for one extra pound can be over $1000!
UPS has a service called Worldwide Expedited which has a hard limit of 150 pounds. If you exceed that, it gets converted to freight ant over $1000 more! The service is about the same as a normal UPS shipment and it arrives in 2-5 days (gets in country in 2-3).
I used it to ship an engine and gearbox in a Seeley cradle the France. You can read about it here. If you don't want to read the whole thing, skip down to November. I don't remember the exact amount but it was about $700 for the crate and box, door-to-door. There was a lot of doing and re-doing that would not have happened if I had known about the service when I built the basic crate and if I had weights at my disposal.
I'll continue as I have components to weight (and complete bikes).

60 pounds |
The was a complete bottom end. I forgot to weigh it by itself. It was mounted on an AN engine stand and that was screwed to a 3/4" thick piece of plywood. The box was 16" x 16" x 16". The packing was Styrofoam and expanding foam packets so the packing weighed very little. The parts that went with it weighed about one pound. So, I estimate the bottom end itself to weigh 50-53 pounds. |
